Session Name: Back to Basics: Rethinking Copyright -- Property or Monopoly
MeetingType: Chapter Meeting
Date: 01/24/08
Description: What is copyright again, what are its origins, what was it intended to do and whom should it protect, anyway? Is copyright a limited monopoly or a property right -- and how can the two different starting points lead to dramatically different results? Issues affected can run from Internet uses, to criminalization of copyright, to fair use -- including claims of copyright misuse where access to materials is denied, such as the misuse claims pending in Schloss v. Sweeny, over denial of a scholar's request to use James Joyce material to substantiate her arguments concerning his works.
