Session Name: Get a Second Life -- Copyright in Virtual Worlds
MeetingType: Chapter Meeting
Date: 02/27/08
Description: Are you prepared for the real-world impact of virtual copyrights? Are you ready for avatar vs. avatar disputes? Second Life is a “3D online digital world imagined and created by its residents.” Second Life has over 10 million residents -- and a robust economy where over $1 million is exchanged daily. Residents have invested heavily in Second Life, on the premise that they retain all intellectual property rights over their creations within that world. Yet there is trouble in Paradise Cove Island, as the virtual goods of online creators are being copied and sold for profit without authorization. Should these virtual-world copyright rights and infringements be treated any differently from those in the “real” world? To demonstrate the features of Second Life, our presentation will include footage supplied courtesy of CBS Broadcasting, Inc.
